New York-based bar committee for human rights examining president-proposed draft constitutionMinsk, 1 October. A New York-based bar committee for human rights is examining draft constitutional amendments proposed by President Alyaksandr Lukashenka for a national referendum. Zyanon Paznyak, leader of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF), and BPF spokesman Syarhey Navumchyk, who have recently been granted political asylum in the United States, have already informed this organization of their opinion about the draft amendments. They stated that with the help of the amendments, Mr. Lukashenka tries to strengthen his dictatorship in a legal way. The conclusion drawn by the bar committee is expected to be made known to a number of international organizations, including the Council of Europe. |
