Central election commission to regard attempts to hold referendum on November 7 as disorganization of the plebiscite

1996-10-02 14:20

Minsk, 2 October. Any attempts to hold the referendum on November 7 "will be regarded by us as the disorganization of this important state plebiscite," said Viktar Hanchar, chairman of the central election commission.
The commission will regard such attempts as acts punishable under the Criminal Code, and will appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office to institute criminal proceedings, Mr. Hanchar stressed. He added that the referendum might be scheduled for another day only if the Supreme Soviet revoked or altered its Resolution on the Holding of a National Referendum and Measures for its Organization, or if the Constitutional Court found this resolution unconstitutional.
