Forty MPs demand that president take back his words about lawmakers' unwillingness to attend All-Belarusian People's Assembly

1996-10-21 15:30

Minsk, 21 October. Over 40 MPs who were not invited to the All-Belarusian People's Assembly and denied access to the forum, have sent an open letter to President Alyaksandr Lukashenka. The reason for the letter is the fact that in his speech at the Assembly and in an interview with Belarusian television reporters, the president said that all the deputies to the Supreme Soviet had been invited to the forum, but they had not considered it necessary to attend it. The MPs who have signed the letter propose to Mr. Lukashenka that he should apologize for that unfounded statement. They warn that if they receive no reply through the national media within the following 10 days, they will exercise their right to take the case to court to obtain justice.
