Belarusian Popular Front activists in Glubokoye intend to monitor activities of new members of district sovietBy Tatyana Chebotaryova, BelaPAN Vitebsk, 31 January. The Belarusian Popular Front (BPF)'s charter in Glubokoye, Vitebsk region, has announced plans to monitor whether three newly elected members of the district soviet are working to fulfill promises that they made to voters. During the monitoring campaign called "100 Days," local BPF activists intend to conduct a poll to ask voters about their opinion of the deputies' activities. If most of them give a negative opinion, the charter will make a try to register a group that would collect signatures to a petition calling for the deputies to be unseated. Yaroslav Bernikovich, a local BPF activist, said that the campaign had started on January 20 when the surnames of the newly elected members of the district soviet had been published officially by a local newspaper. The three members of the district soviet are Eduard Tonkonog, head of a construction company; Maksim Girdyuk, a teacher at a general education school; and Lyudmila Cheban, first secretary of the Belarusian National Youth Union's district committee. "We are now distributing leaflets, reading that the past elections were neither transparent nor fair and were marked by numerous irregularities," Mr. Bernikovich said. Mr. Bernikovich also was a candidate in the January 9-14 local elections. His opponent in the race for a seat in the district soviet, Mr. Tonkonog, was declared the winner. |
