Central election commission announces reelection of Lukashenko for third five-year termMinsk, 20 March. Aleksandr Lukashenko received 82.6 percent, announced the central election commission after 100 percent of the votes were reported to have been counted. "I want to say that Aleksandr Grigoryevich Lukashenko was elected president of the Republic of Belarus for a third term in elections on March 19, 2006," Lidiya Yermoshina, head of the commission, told reporters at about 3 a.m. and started applauding together with some of those present. According to the commission, six percent voted for Aleksandr Milinkevich, 3.5 percent for Sergei Gaidukevich, and 2.3 percent for Aleksandr Kozulin. The incumbent allegedly gained 90.2 percent in the Gomel region, 88.5 percent in the Mogilyov region, 83.8 percent in the Grodno region, 82.9 percent in the Vitebsk region, 83.6 percent in the Brest region, 81 percent in the Minsk region, and 70.7 percent in the city of Minsk. |
